Culturally Sustaining Mentorship

The HTH Consortium believes that one of the ways to ensure the success and longevity of its new residency program is to support all Cooperating Teachers (CTs) in becoming fluent in culturally sustaining mentorship practices -- including, but not limited to, tools from Zaretta Hammond’s Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain resource and Elena Aguilar’s Coaching for Equity and Onward framework. The funding offered via the capacity grant will support HTH in partnering with the High Tech High Graduate School of Education (HTHGSE) to develop an extensive new sequence of professional learning for CTs which will support teacher residents and their CTs in forming productive learning partnerships across lines of difference.

Affirming Identity

Purpose: When we deeply understand each other’s stories, we are more mindful and compassionate mentor. As educators we must always be working towards building our self-awareness by understanding our subconscious core values, beliefs, worldviews, and deep culture in order to best understand how we are showing up for our mentees.

Building Resilience

Purpose: When we build resilience within ourselves, we are then able to co-create experiences with others so that all parties (choose a different word) are emotionally equipped to connect, care for one another, and thrive within a sustaining environment (change maybe?).

Cultivate Collaborative Parnterships

Purpose: When we cultivate collaborative partnerships, we are then able to disrupt traditional power dynamics and inspire ___ (mentees) to grow and become independent learners who advocate for themselves and move confidently in shared spaces.  The resources below contain protocols and methods to give mentor and mentee the opportunity to authentically collaborate on each other’s goals within the partnership.
